Izea Ranks: Real Ranks for Real Blogs!

Mood: Calm
Song: ...

A few months ago, regular bloggers (especially those who write sponsored posts) noticed that their page ranks on Google dropped drastically. Along with that, perhaps their Alexa rankings dipped as well. Ridiculously really, given the fact the content on our blogs hadn't changed...it seemed like we were being punished for taking sponsored posts. In my case, after a lot of hard work, my Google Page Rank plunged to 0 - it's safe to say I was beyond annoyed at what I felt like was an attack on my work.

So when Izea Ranks came about, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. After all, they tout themselves to be "the first site ranking service that focuses exclusively on measuring the traffic and influence of individual blogs throughout the blogosphere. RealRank aims to replace historically unreliable influence indicators such as Google PageRank, Alexa and Comscore by providing more accurate statistical data collected directly from the source." Basically, they were offering accurate rankings that weren't based on unrelated issues like whether or not you took sponsored posts.

At first Izea Ranks was open only to those who participate in PayPerPost/Izea but it's now open to all who want an accurate ranking system for their site's popularity. How do Izea do it? They provide a very transparent service unlike the other, more arbitrary ranking systems out there. Their ranking is accomplished via a weighted sum of the number of visits (70% of total score), daily incoming links (20%) and page views (10%)...basically, the focus is on your site's traffic and its influence on the web.

Now compare Izea's criteria to that of other service providers who base that popularity on the number of sites that link to yours - for example, I know for a fact my cousin visits my blog but I'm not linked on his blog. What matters more in terms of popularity, whether he actually reads my blog or whether I'm linked on his? It's simple really - anyone who thinks it's the latter needs to assess their logic and reasoning skills! ;)

Check out Izea, if anything to compare how influential your site is in the web...on their frontpage, they've got a lovely graph which you can manipulate to compare your site's statistics to others. If that convinces you, then you ought to sign up if you're sick of Google Page Ranks and ready for a revolution!
